Sin City
I am not a comic book reader. I have never seen Miller’s stuff before this film. I can say that the film made it clear that it came from a comic book. Each scene seemed to look like a frame from a comic. It almost makes me want to start reading comic books.
I enjoyed the amazing technical and visual skill of both Miller and Rodriguez. Watching the film was quite beautiful. I also enjoyed the fact that each of the heros were not always heros or damaged in some way. It made it easier to connect to the characters.
Now for my complaints. The film was quite long. Probably due to the fact that it was actually three separate stories linked very superficially. I would have enjoyed each story separately much more. The stories not intertwined at all, thus not required to be shown together. How about showing only two stories this time around, and two more in “Sin City 2″, etc.
I, and probably many others, can only take this level of mega-violence just so long before getting sick. I can deal with violence as necessary to support a story. This film was long enough and had constant almost non-stop violence that it had crossed my limit. I have normally thought I had a very high tolerance for violence.
On a more humorous note, my friend Casey’s only reason she didn’t like the film was that all the men had makeup jobs to make them ugly. Now I agree that they all did look quite ugly, except for Clive Owen. I don’t agree that this is a good reason to hate a movie.
Overall this movie was quite good.
